Finding your next home starts here

10 key steps to renting your next home

Step 1:Set your budget

Review your finances to establish how much you can afford to spend every month on rent. Read our tenant information to find out what upfront costs you’ll need to pay, and learn more about our No Deposit Option.

Step 2:Start your search

Sign up for property alerts online - and speak to the team at your local Leaders branch, so they can let you know as soon as new properties that suit you become available.

Step 3:Arrange your viewings

Visit the properties you like at different times of the day – to get a feel for what it’s really like to live there. And remember to take notes on every viewing.

Step 4:Secure your home

Once you've chosen the home you want to rent, you need to be prepared to act quickly. Ensure you have all the necessary documents ready, including a form of identification.

Step 5:References and credit checks

You’ll need to provide your prospective landlord and letting agent with references, to confirm that you have previously rented without any major problems.

Step 6:Pay your deposit

Unless you’ve opted for our No Deposit Option, you’ll need to pay your deposit in full to secure your new home. Leaders uses a specialist independent company to protect your deposit.

Step 7:Sign your Tenancy Agreement

You will need to check and sign your Tenancy Agreement – this legally binding document sets out the terms of the tenancy, to protect both you and your landlord.

Move in

Step 8:Move in

It’s time to move in! If the property is managed by Leaders, our Move Managers will give you all the details you need, including when to collect the keys for your new home.

Step 9:During your tenancy

If your home is managed by Leaders, we’ll arrange a couple of property inspections throughout the year, to check everything is in order.

Step 10:Renew your tenancy

If your landlord agrees, we can arrange to renew tenancy. But if you don’t wish to stay in the property, we can arrange a check-out with an independent inventory company to ensure the property has been left in an appropriate condition.
